Day 5: June 30, 2011

After receiving universal push-back from the locals on our planned inland route, we decided to do a test ride today, cycling near Mt. Hekla on some back roads. With the heavy luggage and connected bikes, It was indeed a challenge to ride on the loose gravel and rocks, even before we had to cross any rivers. We could probably cover our planned 100+ km (60+ mile) route in 5 or 6 days, but we would be pushing the bikes much of the time. Also, the forecast calls for heavy rain, which will swell the glacier-fed rivers. I decided that the locals were right that the inland route would not be prudent.

We have revised our planned route once again! Tomorrow, we will ride to Landeyjarhofn and take a ferry to the Vestmannaeyjar (Vestmann Islands). Will tell you more about them when we get there.

We also had a mechanical problem. The bikes fell over, breaking the handlebar bag connector. Luckily, we were able to come up with a fix, using tape and cords - see pics.
